I'll explain why in a sec, but here's a rum story.
I was standing in line in a Hampstead post-office yesterday (100 celebs still to write to), listening to a Danish couple arguing behind me, and watching a dear old pensioner slow everyone's progress by scooping vast quantities of 1 and 2 p pieces from her purse as if she was some sort of fairground game, when I noticed a rack containing dirtily cheap CDs.
£1.99 for Shaken & Stirred - The Complete James Bond. Cor blimey guv'nor that's cheap, I thought to myself in an affected cockney manner, whilst checking that the album did indeed contain all 22 theme songs.
I'm not a huge Bond fan, (just 5ft 10... Oh sorry I've used that one before) it's just that I love Carly Simon's honey-dripping voice and particularly the song The Spy Who Loved Me and even more particularly the end bit with the manic violinist.
So imagine my disappointmet when I got home and discovered that the theme tunes wern't in fact originals, but were performed by the world famous (ahem) FILMSCORE ORCHESTRA, who seem to have acquired some of the worst singers on the face of G-d's great earth.
I must say that the young lady who mangled Carly's song into a bloody pulp, truly had the voice of an angel. Yes, an angel with numerous polyps on it's vocal chords and a crushed windpipe. It was like amateur karaoke night at the OK Coral. Just like that scene from Lost in Translation in fact.
As she croaked her way through it I was simply thinking "Nobody sings it flatter, makes me feel so very sad, nobody sings it half as flat as you, why'd you have to be so bad?"
So that was my day.
Anyway, yes, thanks so much to the 3,905 of you that checked this site yesterday. That's a new record number of hits for me in one day. Thank's also for the continued emails of support.
In answer to yours, CrakerToa, you're right, I haven't sent out any of my letters for several days now and I still have 97 addresses to find. Well that's because I'm down to the listees with no agents or those who live abroad, or are just generally difficult to track down, but I will be sending out another batch soon.
I'd also like to thank my new flatmate Lois for getting me contact details for Aled Jones.
So basically, to all 3,905 of you (unless, of course, it's just one nutter logging on every minute of the day) I'd like to say in a Carly Simon sort of way, "darling - you're the best, baby - you're the best repeat ad nauseum"
PS - 2 more meetings agreed. Details soon....
