Aside from being an icon in the world of football commentary, and aside from telephoning me directly when receiving my letter, he was an absolute delight in person.
Our meeting took place in the bright and airy entrance of the BBC building in White City. I was slightly hot and bothered when Michael and I turned up there, partly because today was hot and Michael was bothering me (having rolled out of bed 45 minutes before the planned meeting) and partly because parking a car in the new Mega-City under construction on the other side of Wood Lane proved time-consuming and treacherous.
That all changed when John turned up, as the first thing that he did when we met him was to extract his 'auctionable memento' out of a bag. "This," said John "is my favourite tie that I wear on Match of the Day." Solid gold! Not the tie, but my opinion of John and this gift.
It should be pointed out that my letter to each and every celebrity states that the bringing of these mementos, whilst very generous, is entirely optional and has no bearing on my bet with Michael.
I am certain that Matt and all at the RNIB will be most grateful for this kind gesture from John, and that hopefully, an impressive amount will be raised when the tie is auctioned.
So that was it really- a brief meeting, a handshake, a photograph and like that (whoosh) we were gone. Very much so, I fancy....
